We are gearing up for Winter Recitals at Holly Butcher Music! The students are working hard to prepare their songs for families and friends! As we think about being in front of others to play or sing our music what makes you nervous? Making a mistake on the song? Knowing you are in front of a large crowd? How can we deal with these nervous thoughts and emotions? FIRST...I understand! I get nervous sometimes too! I mostly get nervous if I know I don't quite have that one part of the song ready. I love to sing for others and perform and that helps me.
The first tip in dealing with performance nerves is Be Prepared. Know your song and connect with it. How can you connect with your song? Practice! Also picture a story in your mind that goes along with the music you are playing on the piano. It can help you connect to the music
and enjoy telling the story of the song you are playing! You can also think of your song as a
beautiful painting. Your music is the brush strokes and colors that are bringing it to life.
Vocalist need to connect with the lyrics, look at the audience, and sing from a place of authenticity. Practice speaking the lyrics in front of a mirror and act out the song. The song will begin to become a part of you. Use your hands if you feel comfortable and express with your face and eyes. Know your notes and memorize the lyrics.
If you make a mistake in your song keep going and push through the song. Life goes on and a mistake doesn't need to hold you back from continuing to play piano, sing and grow as a musician. Mistakes are a part of life, being human and growing as a musician.
Music is a gift! I like to think that when I perform a song I am giving a gift of music to others. I want to uplift, tell a story, inspire and bring joy. As we come into the Christmas season what better gift then a gift you worked hard on.
As you prepare to perform the days before the recital eat healthy, get enough sleep, drink water. Take time to relax a bit and give yourself some time to breathe. Self care!
I look forward to hearing all my students play and sing! I am proud of you!
