Practice checklist

Writer's picture: holly butcherholly butcher

When practicing a new song here is a handy checklist to analyze your music.

  1. Before actually playing:

  • In what key is the piece written?

  • What are the names of the sharps or flats in the key signature?

  • Is it written in a Major or minor key?

  • What is the Time Signature?

  • How will you count the rhythm?

  • Is there a pick up note?

  • Are there syncopated rhythms?

  • Tap and count the rhythm if necessary

2. Do a play through first - Once only at the beginning of practice session.

3. Observe all articulation markings:

Phrases

Circle rests, fermatas, staccatos

4. Color in dynamic changes: Green for soft and Red for Loud, Blue for Medium

Practice Right hand alone and then left hand alone

5. Circle any difficult spots.

6. Learn about the composer and historical period

7. And of course...contact www.hollybutchermusic.com for piano lessons!

Have a good week!
